Advanced Acting
Instructor: Janna Browning
For Students K-12th grade
Advanced Acting: Monologue/Scene Study
Session I: Wednesdays, May 7 – June 25 / 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.
Session II: Wednesdays, July 8 – August 27 / 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.
In this class students will work on advanced acting skills with a monologue and a scene. The concepts of objective, obstacle, sense memory and emotional recall will be introduced. We will work using Stanislavsky’s Method and Meisner Technique to allow students to break down scripts and enhance character development. This is an excellent opportunity to work on a strong monologue for auditioning as well as enhancing their ability to work well with other actors. The last class will be opened for family and friends to see what students have learned!
Advanced Acting: Improvisation
Session I: Wednesdays, May 7 – June 25 / 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.
Session II: Wednesdays, July 8 – August 27 / 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.
Improvisation is one of the most important tools an actor can have, and is also one of the most fun! Improvisation builds skills in concentration, observation, giving and taking, spontaneity, and thinking on your feet! Concepts such as "yes, and…" and raising the stakes will be explored. Students will learn how to use this tool for performance as well as to enhance scripted material. The last class will be opened for family and friends to see what students have learned!
Playwriting
Instructor: Janette Gaines
For students entering 9th – 12th grades
Thursdays, June 5 – July 24 / 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Any student registering for this class must keep a journal AND bring it to every class. Any notebook is fine; but, I have found that composition books work very well, and there is no chance of loosing pages. I will have one to show at registration.
Through the use of journals and germinal ideas, each student will develop, write, cast and direct their own 10-minute play. Students will study and apply techniques in character and set development, action vs. dialogue, and correct play script format. All completed scripts will be eligible to compete in this year’s Young Playwright’s Festival at the Barter Theatre in November. We will be planning a group trip to participate in the festival readings.
