Playwriting Journal Ideas
Directions: Choose some or all of the suggested topics below to write about in your journals. Come up with some topics of your own. Write something every day. The more you write, the easier your play topic will be to select and develop. **IMPORTANT: This journal is to be used as a creative writing tool. Do not concern yourself too much with correct English grammar and/or spelling. That can all be adjusted when you begin writing your first draft. HAVE FUN and BE CREATIVE!
Write about someone in your past who has made an impact on you.
Tell what you would do if you found an unsigned suicide note in the girls/boys restroom at school.
Become a character in a famous story. Tell what happens where the traditional story ends. In other words, begin your story at "the end."
Write about a dream you have had. Extend the dream past where you left off when you awoke.
Imagine you entered an imaginary world. Who would you meet? How would you enter and come back?
Tell about the most fun thing you have ever done.
Imagine you wake up on morning, open your bedroom door, and discover things are different on the other side. Explain what you see and describe how it happened. Do you cross over or slam the door?
Write a short story about what is under your bed.
If a ground hog sees his shadow, it is said we will have 6 more weeks of winter. Make up another tale of how someone or something could predict the future.
What is the nicest home you have ever been inside? Describe it in detail.
Tell about a time when you were lost.
You have promised a good friend to keep a secret. However, you now realize if you don’t tell someone, people might get hurt. What do you do?
If you could have a season ALL year, which would you choose and why?
You are camping with your family in a national park. When you wake up in the morning everyone and everything is gone. Tell about your adventure.
You go back in time. Tell how you got there, when you arrive, and how you survive.
Describe the most horrible thing you have ever tasted?
If you had a box with 4 magic chocolates, each with a different power, what would they be and how would you use them?
Suppose you were king/queen. Tell about your kingdom and what you would do.
Would you want to live forever? What would be good or bad about it?
Tell about a time you had to do something difficult.
Imagine there were no televisions, computers, video games, or telephones. What would you do after school?
What makes you laugh?
Describe your favorite room in your house. Why do you like it?
Tell about what you would do if you saw a friend cheating on a test.
Tell about 3 things the world needs today.
What makes a family happy?
Invent a new gadget or toy. Tell all about what it can do.
Describe the life of an average teenager living on Mars.
