JONESBOROUGH REPERTORY THEATRE |
Directed by Jennifer Schmidt
Choreographed by Kristin Smith
June 30 - July 2
Once again Jonesborough Repertory Theatre presented a 1940s USO Show during Historic Jonesborough Days. Each USO production has played to sell-out crowds.
Sponsored by Petersen Family Chiropractic, this year’s USO Show was striving for new levels of excellence. The cast worked hard to put together a brand new show that took the audience members back to an era of great music, dancing and radio entertainment. As is JRT’s USO custom, the 2007 show included a special tribute to all of our veterans and those presently serving in the Armed Forces.
In the 1940s, USO (United Service
Organizations) teams entertained and supported troops with comedy skits,
music from the 40s, dance, and much more. Their theme was and still is
today, “until everyone comes home.” Appropriately, JRT continues to hold
onto that tradition.
The director is Jennifer Schmidt, who, having been with the theatre for over 25 years - acting, singing, and directing – is a true JRT veteran. To the USO she brings her family: husband, Mike, technical director; and son, Lucas on drums. Both have starred in these roles for past USO Shows and for JRT’s February 2007 hit, Smokey Joe’s Café, also directed by Schmidt.
“Jennifer is one of the best and most-loved musical directors in the Tri-Cities,” says JRT’s, Kathleen Buttolph. We are so fortunate to have someone so passionate and talented. Jennifer’s desire for USO is to present an authentic 1940s-style experience. This year’s production features a six-piece ‘big band’ that will make you want to toe tap and jive to tunes like ‘It Don’t Mean a Thing’, ‘Mr. Sandman’, ‘Why Do You Call a Private a Private?’ and so much more.
