Jonesborough Repertory Theatre presented Visit to a Small Planet by Gore Vidal.
JRT’s new Readers Theatre Troop performed this comedic staged reading.
About the play…..in 1956, Gore Vidal wrote this comedic play about humanity's
seeming preoccupation with war and world domination. Visit to a Small Planet
addresses our fears concerning global and nuclear warfare in a hilarious spoof
on alien invasion. When the “alien” Kreton lands his space ship in the middle of
an upscale suburban rose garden, he announces with charming insouciance his
plans to conquer the world. Having observed the barbaric behavior of his hosts,
he views himself merely as their facilitator, and relishes his role as
commander-in-chief of this operation. Although written at the height of the cold
war 50 years ago, Vidal's play is still highly topical today, perhaps even more
so. Please join us for an evening of laughter and thought provoking commentary.
“This readers theatre troop has been formed by a group of talented actors who
just want to ‘play’ around by breathing life into wonderful scripts that have
gone unread or are collecting dust on the neglected bookshelves of our homes“,
says Kathleen Buttolph, JRT Artistic Director. “JRT needed help to find some
good shows. No one seems to have the time or seems to make the time to read
scripts anymore. So, what better way to read them…let’s just go ahead and act
them out and invite an audience along to enjoy it with us.”
