Our Mission

The Jonesborough Repertory Theatre has established as its mission to enhance the quality of life in Jonesborough, Washington County and the Northeast Tennessee area by developing a strong theater program that provides creative and educational performance opportunities for residents regardless of age, income, race, sex or nationality. The Jonesborough Repertory Theatre (JRT) believes in the power of theatrical performance, creative expression, and arts education.

The quality of life of a community is largely determined by the entertainment and educational opportunities, and the cultural activities available. By creating opportunities for youth and adults to nurture and stimulate their creative minds through the performing arts, the JRT is helping make Jonesborough and the surrounding area a more exciting area to live and work. Arts related activities enhance the quality of life in the following ways:

Arts Mean Economic Development – There is a strong correlation between the quality of life and the economic development of a locale. One depends on the other. For every dollar of public or sponsorship funding for non-profit arts activities, over $4.50 in earned income is generated in our communities and state. The Arts increases tourism and increases sales in restaurants, hotels, and retail establishments. People move to communities with a broad range of arts opportunities because it enhances their quality of life. The availability of a comprehensive arts program is one of the top factors people use to determine where they live.

Arts Create Educational Improvements – Studies show without a doubt that arts activities enhance academic achievement. Students participating in the Arts are:

Four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement
Four times more likely to be a participant in a math or science fair
Three times more likely to have excellent high school attendance
Four times as likely to be involved in some community service

Young people in the Arts have lower truancy rates and higher graduation rates. In a changing technological world, creative and analytical skills are at a premium. Exposure to the Arts enhances these skills and creates more educated young people who can also communicate more effectively.

Arts Unify A Community – Arts related activities provide social opportunities in which members of a community can learn about one another and feel more apart of their local environment. Performances in theater, music, dance, etc. help people bridge cultural differences and increase their understanding and tolerance. Quality arts performances develop pride in a community and help residents to be more engaged in all aspects of community life. Activities that unite members of our community and bring people together should be nurtured and supported.
